Become A Freelance Review Writer

* Edit: Just to clear things up, Michael Kwan emailed me saying that he got approached by John Chow and not the other way around. I think you'll still get the point I'm trying to make though.

There are many ways a freelance writer can earn money on the internet today. Unfortunatly most writers have to start out at the bottom writing for websites or bloggers about subjects that they probably don't find interesting. All this for a measly $5 to $20 if they're lucky. So what can you do to earn more if you know that you got talent.

My Experience With Freelance Writers

Lets back up a little and list what I've learned from hiring writers for this website in the past. The complaint that I heard the most was that freelance writers don't get paid enough. I do agree with that but it's all a supply and demand game we're playing here. If you don't want to write a 300 word article for $10 (because you know your worth more) than somebody else will. At this bottom level, Quality isn't going to be great but what do you expect for $5 or $10.

So how does one get to the point where magazines are willing to pay you per word written. My personal opinion is that you must have a unique writing style and a excellent understanding of the basics (ex. grammar, not starting every sentence with "I"). After that, it's really about luck. One thing that you can start to do to increase your "luck" is write as much as possible. Don't write for $5 per article but instead ask for a permanent link to your blog. When I say blog, I really mean your online portfolio. There is nothing more impressive than visiting a writers blog (portfolio) and seeing all the different writing jobs that person has gotten. Since you wrote all those articles for free, everybody will give you a positive recommendation.

I've Written A Bunch Of Articles, Now What?

Now that you have a solid base (and a impressive blog) you can start asking for more money. I would say at the $20 and up range. Which brings me to the hardest part of making a living as a freelance writer.

YOU MUST SEEK OUT WRITING OPPORTUNITIES. If you expect somebody to read an article by you and chase you around to write for them. Than you are on a long moneyless road. So what do I do you ask. The answer is simple, email your favorite websites/blogs and ask if some sort of arrangement can be made to benefit both sides. At this point you already have a solid portfolio (make it look nice) which is a perfect tool for selling yourself. Remember that your writing is the product that you are selling.

A good example of somebody who is going to make lots of money (if they aren't already) is Michael Kwan from
Beyond The Rhetoric. John Chow has outsourced him to do his ReviewMe posts. I'm sure all he did is ask if John was interested. See how powerfull seeking your opportunities is. I bet of all the writers that read his blog, Michael Kwan was one of the few to actually inquire about an opportunity.

So how much does he earn? Well, John Chow charges $400 dollars for a ReviewMe and gets to keep $200 of that. I would guess that he pays Michael Kwan about $40 to $50 to write these reviews. You can see that everybody wins in this situation (John Chow makes around $150 for doing nothing and Michael Kwan makes around $50). $50 is good money for writing articles especially when there's so many writers out there that would be willing to write these reviews for a fraction of that $50.

So lets review, Michael Kwan sought out his opportunity, proposed a win/win situation and has a very good and unique writing style.

Good luck and don't forget to sell, sell, and sell yourself.
