Get To Know Rufus Wainwright

The first concert I ever went to was Rufus Wainwright. I was a young, impressionable thing of thirteen, and being surrounded by dozens of gay men squealing, “It’s like gay day at Disneyland!” certainly will forever live on with me as one of the best concerts I’ve yet experienced. But who is this hip Rufus Wainwright character, you ask?
Well my internet children, I will tell you. |
Rufus Wainwright is the Canadian son of Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, both legendary folk singers in their own rights. He speaks fluent French, and regularly sings in his language. As a child, Wainwright grew interested in a multitude of genres, from Judy Garland’s music, to opera and Edith Piaf. Not surprisingly, Rufus came out as a teenager.
He’s signed to both Geffen Records and Dreamworks Records. Wainwright debuted with Rufus Wainwright in 1998, and was featured in Gap commercials with his song “What Are You Doing New Years’ Eve” during the holiday season, which garnered him mass recognition at the beginning of his career. Three years later, he produced Poses, at the height of his crystal meth addition.

In the two years between Poses and his junior album, Want One, Elton John helped Wainwright out of his addiction by forwarding him to a rehab plan.
Want One and Want Two, released within a year of one another are considered his most experimental albums, bridging the gap between pop and hip opera. He is due to release his fifth full length album in May 2007, which will be titled Release The Stars. |
Currently, Wainwright is planning to write his own opera, tentatively titled, “Prima Donna,” which will examine a day in the life of an opera singer. Wainwright’s boyfriend, Jorn Weisbrodt works as an assistant at the Berlin Opera, and if you ask me, probably prompted the new step for Wainwright.
You probably already love Rufus Wainwright. He’s one of the preeminent soundtrack whores in Hollywood, and his music has appeared in soundtracks for Brokeback Mountain, I Am Sam, Moulin Rouge, Derek Zoolander, and Big Daddy. He’s been flexing his acting muscles, much like his father, with his minor roles in Absolutely Fabulous, Heights and The Aviator. Hopefully, he’ll continue working for years and years to come.
