How to Dress Hip while Playing Poker

Whether you're strolling into a casino's poker room or getting a home game together on Tuesday night, how you dress says a lot about your image at the poker table.
Typically, dressing like a businessman, i.e. suit and tie, will give the other players the idea that you're exactly all about that-- business. This type of dress gives off an intimidating vibe to your opponents. This is not necessarily a good thing. |
Sometimes, especially at a cash game, you want your opponents to be comfortable around you and dressing like their boss will not put them at ease. If they're comfortable around you, then they won't have their guard up every time you're in the pot.
Conversely, you may want to have an intimidating image so opponents will show respect and lay down their hands to you. Dressing sharply will allow you to bluff more often and get away with it. This could be vital when playing in large poker tournaments where you could go hours without picking up a decent hand, while the blinds and antes just keep going up and up.
On the other hand, dressing like a you're going to spend a day at the beach will have the opposite effect. People tend to give people who dress sloppily more action. You will be viewed as a loose, fast player who likes to gamble. You could make this work to your advantage, though. Play fast and aggressive the first few hands you play, but don't piss away all your chips. Early on, just make it seem like you're going to play a lot of hands throughout the course of the night. And then when you finally do get a monster hand, just bet ridiculously and you'll be sure to get more action than if you're viewed as being a tight player. People will not give you credit for a big hand and most likely think you're bluffing.
But that doesn't mean you have to adhere to either extreme. The fun, casual poker-playing hipster is going to dress comfortably, but with style. There's nothing worse than sitting long hours at the table in an uncomfortable suit. And you don't want to look like Kevein Federline by wearing a wifebeater and board shorts, because that's just not hip.

Look sharp by wearing a patterned button-up, short-sleeve cotton shirt. Ben Sherman and Munsingwear make nice retro-looking shirts that are a bit more updated for today's hipster. |

Also, jeans are fine, but they have a tendency to make your ass clammy and cut off circulation to your balls when they ride up. Try wearing some loose Egyptian linen pants by Michael Kors or some chinos. They breath better than jeans and will leave you feeling fresher as the day wears on. |

And what's a poker player without a pair of shades? Don't let your opponents get a read off you by letting them see your eyes. Opt for dark or reflective lenses. None of those “J.Lo” colored, translucent lenses-- utterly useless. |

Shoes really don't matter because they won't be visible under the table, but it never hurts have some cool kicks that match your look. |
Hats are optional, but their brims are useful for pulling down over your brow to block any light that may seep into your shades from above. And if you are a analytical player, you might want set a good luck charm on top of your chips. That'll make your opponents think you're more of a superstitious player who believes in luck more than skill.
So, feel confident and comfortable at the poker table with these tips on how to dress and use them to your advantage. You and your bankroll will thank me later.
