Mid-20's? There's A Hip Name For That (Part 1)

Ok…so in the past few years I’ve been losing my mind.  Well, I’ve always been losing my mind, but this is different.  I’m a bit stressed out about my changing life.  A few months ago, I turned 25.  Now, for a “girl” to turn 25 and still be single, there’s a lot of pressure.  During your mid-twenties, lots of your friends are either seriously dating or married.  I’m pretty sure that if I’ve felt the pressure, a lot of you have as well.  It’s not about competition, but rather about being up to speed with things.  Nobody wants to fall short.

Besides the stress of being single, your mid-twenties also make you obsess on finishing college and finding a career.  It’s all about starting life and being out on your own.  Considering that this is not just something women go through, it can also be understood by men.  I, myself, am in my last year of undergrad.  Sure, I’m a bit behind, but I’m still dealing with this heavy burden on my shoulders.

Here is my scenario:

I want to go away to Africa for a month over the summer to teach children in Uganda.  On one hand, it’s an experience I will probably never have again; on the other hand, it cuts into the time I have to look for a job.  So, what do I do?  Do I cut down on my time to look for a job and take the trip knowing that I may miss out on a job for the fall, or do I miss out on an awesome experience and use the whole summer for job searching?

It all seems to come down to the end…the final year of college, and so much going on.  Who’s not going to be frustrated?  Most people want to get a job out of college, but I’m sure, like myself, many of you worry about the interviews and the possibility of filling a job that many people are applying for.

Back to the relationship melt-downs…I feel like many people, at this time in life, get to the point where they are in a relationship that may be going well, but it’s not everything they want.  During your mid-twenties, you start to get sick of the hurt and pain of break ups, and tend to “settle” in these relationships no matter how bad they are.  I’ve known plenty of people to give up, including myself.  Sometimes I also wonder if I am just settling or just realize that no relationship is going to be perfect.  Every relationship will have its flaws.  I just need to figure out what I’m cool with, and what I’m not.

So, what’s the point of this article?  Well, I’ve done some research after all the stress piled on me, and I realized that I wasn’t alone.  I also realized that there’s a name for this stage in life…QUARTER-LIFE CRISIS.  It really is about everything I’ve discussed and more!

Wikipedia describes a Quarter-Life Crisis as:
  • feeling "not good enough" because one can't find a job that is at his/her academic/intellectual level
  • frustration with relationships, the working world, and finding a suitable job or career
  • confusion of identity
  • insecurity regarding the near future
  • insecurity regarding present accomplishments
  • re-evaluation of close interpersonal relationships
  • disappointment with one's job
  • nostalgia for university or college life
  • tendency to hold stronger opinions
  • boredom with social interactions
  • financially-rooted stress
  • loneliness
  • desire to have c hildren
