How To Hip Up Your Hair

Hairstyles are worth a thousand words, or simply just one. They make a statement. They tell others staring at us how we feel about ourselves, what styles we like, if we are bold or timid or what decade we can’t just seem to let go of. If you desire the look of a hip hairstyle, however, there are some ways to achieve that trendy look that you have been looking for.

Hair salons are one of the most important factors when considering your hip hairdo. If you walk into a salon with white walls and you smell perm solution in the air, then start running as fast as you can! Hip hairstylists who can create mountains out of molehills will be found in the trendy parts of town (near college campuses are ideal). If your too lazy to scout a place, try talking to friends who’s hair you admire and ask where they got their hair cut.

If you are too cool to ask, then drive around the hipster parts of town and check some salons out for yourself. More than likely, front desk staff that are down to earth will greet you. This will be your first sign that this is the right place. Next, take a look around. Notice the clientele, look at the hairstylists to see how they are dressed and how their hair is styled (Tattooed stylists are a big plus). Often so, the hairstylists in that salon will be cutting each other’s hair, so that is a good indicator if they can give you that hip do you have been searching for. Now don't be shy and make an appointment or better yet ask if they can cut your hair on the spot.

Once you have made it into the seat at “Hip Hairdos Etc” and you are in the chair with your fingers crossed, let the hairstylist know exactly what you are looking for. Say, “Hey, I need a hip hairdo. What do you think?” Of course they will agree and start to ask questions on what you want it to look like. One thing that really matters is if you have a job that will allow you to have wild hair or not. Can you take a chance with a wildly colored and bold hairdo?

Here’s what you do need to know: the Caesar hair cut is out of style and needs to be left in ancient history.

Hip Hairstyling Terms and Definitions:

Bangs
Hipsters out there have cut off the utilitarian long locks in the front and have very sharp, distinctive bangs.

Bob
Has been around since the 1920’s and has many variations, angles, bangs/no bangs. The haircut itself is shorter in length, between earlobe and chin. Blunt style.

Devilock

Short hair in the back with the sides and front long. Can be tapered too.

Faux-Hawk

Like the Mohawk, but not shaved to the skin on the sides. There is
still hair on the sides, just not shaved, but enough to create a contrast so you can see the Mohawk.

Mop-top

A blunt cut almost bowl shaped. Ends are slightly tapered that give a smooth look curving inward towards the head.

Mullet
The Caesar goers think this hairdo to be way out of style, but it secretly isn’t. The only thing out of style by most of these proud people is their clothes in fashion. Hipsters with cool fashion can pull off the mullet (short in front and sides but long in back) quite well.

Pixie Cut
A variety of short layers, wispy bangs. Frame the face and back of head. Over the ears, not above.

Some of us out there don’t have the dough for a $75-100 haircut. What to do? There are several natural ways of having hip hair. You’ve heard of the word “bed head” right? Well, that’s a natural, hip look that didn’t cost any money at all. Get out of bed and go! Maybe put a little hair spray on that one piece that is sticking up for a longer lasting look. Of course you’ve heard of “hat head”, when you’ve been wearing a hat all day that’s caused your hair to be molded to the hat. Well, take your hat off and give yourself a noogie. This will definitely give you a look nobody else has. Feeling bold? Try cutting your own hair.

I know many hipsters that cut their own hair and it looks fabulous. A little piece here, a little there. Cutting your own hair works best if it’s already short. Taking all one length locks and clipping here and there might be a difficult task on your own. Who knows, maybe you’ll invent a new hip hairdo!

The main key is to be different. Be bold. Add color. Add creativity. Make it you.
