What's Looks Got To Do, Got To Do With It ? By Holly, Hipsterpad.com|Email|
My bar has entered me in the local “Hottest Bartender Contest.”
Wet t-shirts, getting the audience to scream, shooter wins all…yeah, that’s what I was picturing too. But luckily, it’s nothing like that.
This annual contest is hosted by a local magazine; each bar gets to enter one female bartender and one male bartender. There are two winners: one female and one male.
The process was simple. My boss called the magazine and told them I would enter and they sent a reporter during my happy hour shift. She took my picture (from the chest up, of course) and asked me a variety of odd questions.
In the past, I’ve never paid attention to the hottest bartender contest; mainly because I only go to one bar and I don’t read this magazine often, if ever. Now that the contest has kicked off, I’ve checked out my competition and am curious about the results.
The voting is all done online. There are pictures of the contestants along with the answers to the questions we answered, then the voting buttons. The winner gets cash and various prizes from the bars that entered a contestant.
This contest gets chalked up as another new experience I’ve been through since I started bartending. If nothing else, it gives me something to write about—this all coming from the writer who auditioned for Playboy to get a great column out of it.
Oddly enough, this superficial competition has got me thinking. Chances are, every single contestant is “the” hottest bartender in our area, right? Every bar regular is going to vote for “their” bartender. She is the one who serves them their daily gin or knows them by name. He is the one who remembers their name or pays for a few rounds. She is the one who makes a perfect gimlet. He is the one who knifes beers the fastest.
For men, a “hot” girl might meet a few criteria. She might have blond hair or a small waist and double Ds. Maybe she knows how to make the perfect Crown and Coke. As a woman, I think of “hot” as something completely different. To me, of course being hot is a degree of attraction, but it’s more than just something physical.
A “hot” guy is someone who intrigues me; someone who makes me want more because they are a bit mysterious. Hot means to be humorous, witty, smart, and confident: a hot guy looks good in jeans, but even better in boxers. A hot guy is more concerned with his work or family rather than the gym. He believes in something, is loyal, and holds an opinion.
Is that what it means to be “The Hottest Bartender?” Probably not. My bar patrons visit me for one reason or the other. Maybe it’s to have a chat or maybe it’s to look at my chest in a tank top—I may not ever know. I do know that I am flattered to be entered in the contest; it’s something fun and I’m hoping to serve a few new guests at the bar soon because of it.
