Top Ten Records Every Hipster Needs
 By Sarah, Guest Writer
|Email|

One typical Sunday in our sleepy Central Texas suburb, my cousin had a dark confession to make while we are riding around in his truck. He tells me that he has a CD he thinks I would really like because all the hip kids at school are listening to it. Although I figured it was tasteless and contrived, I was at the mercy of his stereo. Bright Eyes blared and my ears were assaulted.

I turned it down to barely audible and said “you are not related to me are you?” After he begged and pleaded for his hip makeover after I scolded him, it occurred to me that I really should start charging for this.

The Hipster Essentials:

Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker

Ok guys quit your cryin’, shut up and buy this album. Yes Mr. Adams is a whiny hash smoking troubadour, but he will get you laid. Every hipster and sorority girl in your zip code has this album. With the track “Come Pick me Up” the panties will start dropping like Tara Reid’s boob job.
Nilsson - Son of Schmilsson

Imagine Brian Wilson sane with the face of a teddy bear. Infamous for the title track for Midnight Cowboy, Nilsson mixed AM gold with fluffy sarcasm that makes for great storytelling. “Spaceman” is a song that was before its time, almost a ballad but what it lacks in emotion it makes up for in the drum solo. Also check out “Your Breakin’ My Heart” Nilsson just says it: “You’re breakin’ my heart so fuck you!”, doesn’t get better than that.
Black Keys - Rubber Factory

Purity has taken a new form and this new wave of hip comes in the package of two skinny white guys from Ohio. Drums and guitar is all they need to make a sound that certifies their blues passport. “Act nice and Gentle” is a song that flows with perfection and brings back a simplicity rock has been missing.

Verbena La Musica Negra

This is the best band you have never heard of. Complicated, no, beautiful and unadulterated, yes! However Dave Grohl did produce their sophomore album Into the Pink that was forgettable. La Musica Negra is rock. Forget all the post, new wave, post post, alternative, power, progressive prefixes, it’s just rock so shut up and listen to it!
Television - Marquee Moon

The beautiful thing about Television is the era that they came from. When The Ramones were the headliners at CBGB, Television was opening for them. The crowd didn’t understand their aesthetic and was eventually annoyed by the drawn out solos between lyrics. The superiority comes when you least expect it, “Marquee Moon” slowly fades out to make you think the song is done and builds back up to blow your top off, an asset The Ramones lacked.
Braid - Movie Music Vol. I

If you like Pavement , and maybe a little more structure, Braid is the band to hear. Movie Music Vol. I is a compilation of singles from their 1993 – 1999 run at stardom. These guys look square and I like that about them. In the nineties asymmetrical haircuts had yet to reach their popularity. They were just four dudes with an almost hollow sound and screeching vocals. Ok so maybe they owned some flannel, but didn’t we all?
Melt Banana - Teeny Shiny

These guys are veterans of the Japanese surf punk movement. I chose Teeny Shiny because it is one of their more coherent albums. “The moon struck Back” is played at warp speed but never loses your interest.
Fiery Furnaces - EP

Although there is two other full length albums the Furnaces have put out I still go back to the EP. “Sullivan’s Social Club” mesmerizes. This brother and sister team are not afraid of a good bass line and random choruses.
Beta Band - Heros to Zeros

A lot of people would dispute that the Beta Band’s Three EP’s is by far their best to date. Heroes to Zeros has flown slightly under the radar. With a sweeping first track that I don’t find the use of saxophones annoying.
The Bens - EP

This EP is an indie nerd’s wet dream. Ben Folds, Ben Kweller, and Ben Lee decided to get together and write some ultra melancholy and catchy tracks. The title track “Just Pretend” was concocted by each of the Ben’s writing lyrics on their own and them bringing them together not knowing what the others wrote. Talented fuckers, all I would come up with is that dumb squirrel look on my face trying to write something of substance with two other geniuses.

Those are my top hipster records and if you haven't heard of any of these, I would strongly advise you to check them out.
